Watching the trailers made me 100% sure that this movie would become a wonderful one in Depp's filmography; especially after a huge disaster like "The Tourist". Then came all these negative reviews and low ratings on different websites, but yet still I had hope that the movie is probably notterriblethey say. I'm proud to say I wasn't wrong! There are three reasons that Mortdecai is worth watching: Johnny Depp's acting,being an adaptation of a popular novel and being a comedy. Let's face it: the movie is not a "hilarious" comedy, and it can't be compared to spy comedies such"The Pink Panther", but yet still the movie is entertaining and that's a reason most of the people watch a movie for: to be entertained. We should agree that the script is weak; everything happens kind of so fast so we don't get to focus on some details which could have saved the movie from being so muddled. We don't even get to know the characters so well, except Mortdecai himself, considering the movie is "about" him. The writers were sure so focused on characterizing Mortdecai, they totally forgot that other characters exist. Georgina Krampf(played by Olivia Munn) for example, could have played a basic role in the movie; but even the introduction happens so fast, andsoonwe meet this character, we realize that she's trying to steal the painting herself. Of course there's no chemistry among the actors in such movie where none of the characters except the main one are characterized properly. Even without a large amount of details which were not included in the film, the movie seems slow and boring, but yet there's a reason to keep watching: the man himself, Charlie Mortdecai, beautifully portrayed by Johnny Depp. In fact, the only actor who is actually "acting" in the movie is Depp. His acting is unique and quite different from his previous works(and for the record it's nothing like Jack Sparrow). There were a lot of negative reviews questioning the script but no-one mentioned that Depp is great in the movie and he's the only reason the movie is not totally unbearable! After Depp, the only one who is "acting" is Paul Bettany who portrays "Jock", Mortdecai's loyal manservant. He is indeed greatJock(even though there's no chemistry between Mortdecai and him either). About 99% of the film's comic scenes include Mortdecai and Jock; they're kind of like Steve Martin and Jean Reno in The Pink Panther. The movie should have been longer so that it could include more details, about both the story and the characters. It could have include more action scenes and of course it could have been funnier. It totally had the potential to become a memorable movie(evengreatThe Pink Panther) especially considering that it was based on a popular novel. Pity the script was not well-written. Also considering that Koepp was directing, I was quite surprised the film was this muddled. But Mortdecai is a memorable character himself, thanks to Depp's acting(Actually I never thought a day will come that Depp would do all the acting in a film! To be honest,the only movies in which he really acts are Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Sweeney Todd and now Mortdecai). So if the movie is notgoodexpected, the writers are the ones to blame! Mortdecai is not "perfect", but that doesn't mean that it's not worth watching. I don't say it's a "must-see", but it will keep you entertained and it will make you laugh. That was a reason most people watched movies for, wasn't it? I found it hard to dislike this film but didn't like it either. I couldn't understand the point of it. I think it defines the word 'bland.' Johnny Depp continues to look like an American practicing a funny English accent in front of his friends. It might be funny for a short while if you like that kind of thing but it isn't long before you're thinking , "Ok, that's enough now." They say the American comedy is in decline and maybe they like to piggy back onto British humour for a leg-up. This didn't work. Even though it looks like Paul Whitehouse was giving Depp lessons. Perhaps if Whitehouse had played the lead role it would have been a funnier, though less lucrative, film. I like Gwyneth P so it was good to see her, whats-his-face who played her besotted ex boyfriend was good, and Jack's was a well done character. It was so full of clichés - stolen art, Russian gangsters, a love triangle and , oh my god, sword fencing ( he is an aristocrat after all) that the script writers need to take a good look at themselves. It was a lighthearted film, no harm in that these days, and had a few amusing moments, so I rate it 5/10. Contrary to appearances, Mortdecai isn’t a total disaster: Depp may be suffering the most catastrophic career slump since Eddie Murphy said yes to Norbit, but he’s still perfectly watchable.
